The controversy arose after Omokri, during an interview, dismissed reports that Mexico had rejected his diplomatic appointment.

He insisted that such claims were being pushed by political opponents and explained that his delayed resumption was connected to the ongoing FIFA World Cup activities involving the United States and Mexico.
