25 Years After 9/11: Remembering Godwin Ajala, The Nigerian Who Held the Door

Twenty-five years after the tragic September 11, 2001 attacks, the world continues to remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost — including Godwin Ajala, a Nigerian-trained lawyer who gave his life helping others escape the World Trade Center.
Born in 1968 in Ihenta, present-day Ebonyi State, Ajala moved to the United States in 1995 with dreams of building a better future for his wife and three children.

Unable to immediately practise law in America, he worked as a security officer at the World Trade Center while studying for the New York Bar Exam.
When the second plane struck the South Tower on 9/11, Ajala chose not to run.

He held the doors open for people fleeing the building and repeatedly went back inside to guide others to safety. After exhausting himself in the rescue effort, he collapsed, fell into a coma and died six days later, on September 16, 2001, aged just 33.
He never got to practise law in America. He never got to bring his family over. But he left behind something far greater — an extraordinary legacy of courage, sacrifice and humanity.

Twenty-five years later, Godwin Ajala remains a powerful reminder that heroes are not always famous. Sometimes, they are ordinary people who, in an extraordinary moment, choose to save others.
