Arsenal moved one step closer to lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time in 22 years with a narrow 1-0 win against West Ham United on Sunday afternoon. The defeat inches the Hammers ever closer to the Championship, too.
Leandro Trossard was the match-winner, with his 81st-minute strike securing all three points in east London. It was almost a very different story, however, as the hosts thought they’d rescued a vital point when Callum Wilson rifled in a volley in added time.
After a lengthy VAR review, the goal was ruled out for a foul on Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya. The Spanish shot-stopper had already made a huge save to deny Matheus Fernandes and was judged to have been impeded by Pablo.

David Raya’s Message to Leandro Trossard

Speaking after the match, Trossard was overjoyed at putting his team five points clear of Manchester City once again. When asked by the Sky Sports interviewer whether he was nervous during the five-minute VAR check, he revealed his goalkeeper’s reassuring words.
The confidence the Arsenal winger had about the goal being ruled out came from Raya telling him immediately that it was a foul ‘100%. He explained:
“David said straight away, ‘It has to be no goal, 100%’. So I had a lot of faith in that moment and believed him because he was pretty convincing.”

While there was no doubt at all in Raya’s mind, social media hasn’t quite been the same. Trossard did admit ‘you never know’ what decisions referees could come to, adding: “You never know, obviously, and in the end you are thinking, ‘It’s not going our way’ but luckily it was a foul and we won the game.”
Nonetheless, the north London outfit go into a home game against relegated Burnley and a trip to Crystal Palace needing two wins to make sure of the title. They can win it at the Emirates Stadium next week if City drop points in their next fixture.
Trossard on ‘Pure Joy’ as Arsenal Near Title

Trossard headed into Sunday’s game without finding the net in the Premier League since the final game of 2025. Since that victory against Aston Villa, the 31-year-old has struggled for form. Following his sixth, and most important, goal of the season, he told Sky Sports:
“When I scored it was pure joy because we knew we had to win today. We know what they are fighting for as well and it was a tough ground to come to. Today was a great time for me to score and get the win today! It’s another two games to go and hopefully there is something nice waiting for us.”
