Dowen College

Dowen College on Wednesday released another statement concerning the death of a student, Sylvester Oromoni.

The statement titled ‘Sylvester Oromoni’s Death: Dowen College Committed To Justice’, revealed that the school began an internal investigation into the case of bullying reported by Oromoni’s family.

The statement partly read, “It is true that though he went home on the 23rd of November, his family did call on the 29th to inform us that he said he was actually bullied by five senior students whose names he mentioned.

“We confirm that we immediately started internal investigations on the 30th but he passed on that same day.

“Sadly, we had barely made any headway before the social media frenzy commenced.”

The school also ensured that it’d get to the bottom of the allegations that have been made, while also maintaining that Sylvester had suffered a leg injury.

“We are distressed that a child sustained a leg injury, and passed on a week later. We are as shocked as the rest of the world to see our lovely boy look so ill and be in so much pain from the videos posted,” the school management said.

The father of the deceased boarding student, Sylvester Oromoni Snr, had alleged that the Junior Secondary School 2 pupil died from the injuries sustained during an assault by five of his colleagues who wanted to initiate him into cultism but the school claimed he died after sustaining an injury during a football match in an earlier statement.

Meanwhile, the school has been shut down by the Lagos State Government pending the outcome of the investigation.

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu, on Tuesday, said three students are currently in police custody for alleged assault while two are at large.
