It was a journey that never ended.
What started as a routine trip on the Minna-Bida Road turned to blood and wails on Monday when five lives were cut short in a fatal head-on collision between a Hilux van in the convoy of Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, and a private Peugeot 206 at Gidan Mangoro community.
Among the dead, witnesses said with a heavy heart, was Nafisat — a vibrant young woman, programme manager with Labspace NGO and founder of Wosh Mart Service Ltd. A life full of dreams, gone in an instant.

The crash, which occurred about 11:35 a.m. while the governor was returning from Bida, has thrown families into mourning and left a community in shock.
According to a resident, Abdullahi Musa, the private car was conveying persons believed to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna.
He said they died on the spot, while occupants of the government Hilux battled for life with severe injuries.
“It was wrongful overtaking,” Musa alleged, his voice still shaken. “The Peugeot was on its own lane when the Hilux rammed into it.” The claim is yet to be officially confirmed.
At Minna General Hospital, the horror continued. A hospital source initially confirmed three lifeless bodies brought in, before two more gave up the ghost from fatal injuries — raising the toll to five. Others, bleeding and broken, were rushed to IBB Specialist Hospital for urgent care.
One of the survivors was said to be a former local government chairman, now nursing leg fractures and fighting through pain.
The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the crash but said her men met an empty scene — the dead and the injured had already been evacuated.
Behind the mangled vehicles are shattered families waiting for loved ones who will never return home, colleagues mourning a promising professional, and survivors left to relive the moment everything went dark.
For many road users, it is another painful reminder that a single moment of recklessness behind the wheel can end lives forever.
