Tragedy in Anambra: Tansian University VC Dies 24 Hours After Assumption of Office

Prof. Cater Dike Umeoduagu, the newly inaugurated Vice-Chancellor of Tansian University, Umunya/Oba, Anambra State, has died barely 24 hours after assuming office.

Umeoduagu was inaugurated as Vice-Chancellor on Friday, October 2, 2026.

Sources said he took ill later that night and died suddenly in the early hours of Saturday, October 3.

According to sources familiar with the development, he became unwell around midnight and was pronounced dead at about 2 a.m.

His death has thrown the university community into shock, coming just hours after he took over leadership of the institution.

Umeoduagu, a Professor of Microbiology, had previously served as Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the university.

He was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata 1 Constituency in the Seventh Assembly.

His tenure as DVC was said to have been marked by internal challenges and disagreements.

As of press time, the cause of his sudden death had not been disclosed.

The university management is yet to issue an official statement on his passing.
