Residents of Iluke Bunu in Kabba-Bunu Local Government Area of Kogi State have been thrown into mourning following a deadly attack by suspected bandits that reportedly resulted in the death of a vice principal and the abduction of several students.
According to local reports, the victim, identified as Mr. Gani Anifowose, Vice Principal of Government Secondary School, Iluke, was killed during the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday.
The incident has heightened fears among residents and renewed concerns about the security situation in parts of Kogi State, particularly in rural communities vulnerable to criminal attacks.

Sources within the community said panic spread across the area as armed assailants reportedly invaded the community, causing residents to flee for safety. The attack has left many families worried about the safety of their loved ones and the future of educational activities in the area.
In a related development, several students from neighbouring communities who were reportedly on their way to sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) English Language paper were said to have been abducted during the security breach. However, authorities had yet to officially confirm the exact number of students involved as of the time of filing this report.
Community leaders have called on security agencies and government authorities to urgently intervene, strengthen security presence in the affected communities, and intensify efforts to secure the release of the abducted victims.
A representative of the community association expressed concern over the situation, alleging that appeals for emergency assistance had not yielded immediate intervention at the time of the attack. The association urged residents to remain calm while awaiting official rescue operations.
The latest incident adds to growing concerns over attacks on schools and communities in parts of Nigeria, where criminal groups have increasingly targeted vulnerable settlements, leading to loss of lives, kidnappings, and disruptions to educational activities.
As of press time, security agencies had not released an official statement regarding the attack, the reported abductions, or ongoing rescue efforts. Residents are hopeful that swift intervention by security operatives will help restore calm and ensure the safe return of those reportedly taken by the attackers.
The Kogi State Government and relevant security authorities are expected to provide further updates as investigations and response operations continue.
