Kenneth Okonkwo, spokesperson for the Atiku Abubakar presidential campaign, says a coalition is the only way opposition parties can wrest power from President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

Speaking during an interview with Ibeju Upgrade Media, Okonkwo downplayed the chances of Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in the 2027 elections.

In 2025, the opposition parties’ attempts to form a coalition hit a brick wall as the major contenders in the 2027 elections, including Obi and Atiku, became presidential candidates for various parties.

Meanwhile, the G100 Opposition Coalition, a group led by Salihu Lukman, a chieftain of the ADC, has commenced fresh efforts to woo opposition parties to rally behind a single presidential candidate to challenge the APC in the 2027 elections.

‘TINUBU WILL EAT OBI LIKE BISCUITS’

Okonkwo said a coalition remains the opposition’s only viable option, arguing that Obi, with Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate, cannot unseat Tinubu.

“Coalition is the only way out. So you don’t come down with a man who has told you from the beginning that power is not taken à la carte; you fight for it, you grab it, you snatch it, you run away with it,” Okonkwo said, referring to Tinubu.

“So, if Peter Obi goes against Tinubu alone, Tinubu will eat him like biscuits. Will Kano people accept Peter Obi? In 2023, when we had the opportunity, they did not accept him. In 2027, they will not accept him.

“Kwankwaso has nothing to contribute to the ticket. Even in Kano, Kwankwaso has lost.”

In May, Okonkwo said Obi lacks the capacity to solve Nigeria’s challenges.
