Tinubu Mourns Islamic Cleric, Recalls His Guidance During Lagos Governorship

President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday mourned the passing of Lagos-based Islamic scholar and community leader, Sheikh Tijani Gbajabiamila, describing him as a beacon of guidance and wisdom whose contributions to religious life, interfaith harmony and community development left an enduring mark on Lagos State and the nation.

In a personal tribute, Tinubu recalled that his relationship with Imam Gbajabiamila predated his tenure as governor of Lagos State and that he had personally benefited from the cleric’s guidance as a Muslim scholar and passionate religious leader.

“During my tenure as Governor of Lagos State, and much earlier in life, I had the honour of knowing and benefiting from the guidance of Imam Gbajabiamila as a dedicated Muslim scholar and passionate religious leader,” the President said.

He described the late imam as a man whose knowledge of the Quran and Islamic teachings was unparalleled and whose ability to interpret and apply Islamic principles to everyday life earned him widespread reverence.

“He led Islamic worship services, delivered sermons, and provided spiritual advice to his immediate and larger community.

“He was a strong advocate for education and encouraged young Muslims to pursue knowledge and personal development,” Tinubu said.

The President highlighted the late cleric’s role as a community leader beyond the mosque, describing him as a teacher, mediator and counsellor.

“He was a teacher, educating the youth about Islamic principles and practices, and a mediator, resolving differences within the community.

“His commitment to social justice and community development was evident in his work with various Islamic organisations and his involvement in local governance,” he said.

Tinubu particularly noted Imam Gbajabiamila’s work in promoting interfaith understanding as one of his most significant legacies.

“He worked tirelessly to build bridges between different religious communities, promoting mutual respect and understanding.

“His efforts helped to foster a sense of unity and cooperation among people of different faiths and backgrounds,” the President said.

During his lifetime, Imam Gbajabiamila served as Director of Islamic Affairs of the Zumuratul Islamiyyah Youth Association, Vice Chairman of the Council of Chief Imams and Alfas for the Lagos Division, a trustee of the Zumratul Islamiyyah Society of Nigeria, and an adviser to numerous Islamic organisations.

“Imam Gbajabiamila’s legacy extends beyond his role as a religious leader.

“He was a unifying figure, bringing people together through his wisdom and knowledge.

“His passing is a loss to our state and the nation, but his legacy will continue to guide and inspire us,” Tinubu said.

The President extended his condolences to the imam’s immediate family, the people and Government of Lagos State, and his students and admirers worldwide.
