We were firm on the form our own celebration would not take: no wearing of our school uniform nor filing before some fellow for our bums to be whipped, as shown in one viral report said to have emanated from India. Or the likes. We are The Trailblazers…and must celebrate 50 years of leaving secondary school (Ibadan Boys’ High School, Ibadan) like none other. And, that is what we did over the weekend of Friday 9 October to Saturday 10 October 2026. That Friday, we turned out in baggy trousers, aka cargo pants, made of ankara fabric with patch pockets made from ofi. We topped it with white Polo collar shirts with our school crest monogrammed on it, and THE TRAILBLAZERS printed in brown colour in front and FIFTY YEARS OUT, REBUILDING WITH LOVE. at the back. The shirts were made by OSC College of Fashion. Indeed, rebuilding has been a hallmark of the set, from when we reconnected in 2015, with the help of WhatsApp. You will find the full story here: https://lnkd.in/dGKiDRGV. For the full story of our latest-and-largest gift to the school – a 3-workshop Vocational Training Centre – please come here – https://lnkd.in/dzvBR67g – and here – https://lnkd.in/dzvBR67g. A second phase – equipping the Centre – is loading. On Saturday, 10 October, we turned up at the Academy Suites – the one at Oke Ado – and also had a change of leadership. See: https://lnkd.in/dpJh7Egz. What preceded the party was a walk down memory lane well paved by Dr. Raphael James. In October last year, he did a similar thing for me when The Journalism Clinic hosted the Appreciation Day for Nigeria’s news media elders. There is a little back story. I had seen a post online of Vintage Africana Lagos, run by Akin Alabi, a creative dude, which took me back in time, and I not only wrote about it (https://lnkd.in/p/d-NR-TzG), I also called him to ask if he could sort of carry part of his museum to Ibadan. On my mind was a nostalgia complement to our celebration. We did not conclude. Then, one public holiday when I dressed up with nowhere to go, I chatted with James and I decided I should visit his Centre for Research, Information and Media Development. There, I saw many of the things that made me call Alabi. Voila. James and I agreed that CRIMMD would be part of our ceremony. And: it was a hit. His report follows: https://lnkd.in/dsj5xs6k. The Adetokunbo Akintola in the Comments is my classmate and President of the Ibadan Boys’ High School Old Boys Association (IBHSOBA) with active branches in Europe and America. It was indeed a “wonderful experience.” The party that followed, even more so. Hope you can get the feel from these pix and videos 1. https://lnkd.in/dzHqpTBm 2.
