Pius Ughakpoteni, Former ThisDay and NDDC Director, Dies At 62

It is with profound sorrow and a deep sense of loss that the Executive Committee of the THISDAY Alumni Association announces the sudden passing of our esteemed member, colleague, and friend, Dr. Pius O. Ughakpoteni, on Thursday, June 11, 2026. The sad news was confirmed by his daughter, Blessing. He would have celebrated his 62nd birthday on June 26, 2026.

Dr. Ughakpoteni was a distinguished journalist, communications strategist, public affairs administrator, author, and management expert whose illustrious career spanned more than three decades across journalism, corporate communications, and public service.

As a former researcher and reporter with THISDAY newspaper, he contributed significantly to the growth, credibility, and professional standing of the organisation.

Throughout his remarkable career, he exemplified excellence, intellectual rigour, and an unwavering commitment to public service. He later rose to prominence in strategic communications at the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), where he served with distinction as Director of Media Relations and subsequently Director of Corporate Affairs. In these capacities, he earned widespread respect for his professionalism, integrity, and dedication to transparent and effective public communication.

A highly accomplished scholar, Dr. Ughakpoteni held multiple master’s degrees from leading universities in the United Kingdom and obtained a Doctorate in Business Administration from Business School Lausanne, Switzerland. His academic and professional interests centred on corporate sustainability, executive leadership, and strategic transformation, areas in which he earned recognition both nationally and internationally.

Born on June 26, 1964, in Eruemukohwarien, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, he remained deeply connected to his roots while building a career that inspired colleagues, students, and professionals across diverse fields.

To members of the THISDAY Alumni Association, Dr. Ughakpoteni will be remembered not only for his impressive professional accomplishments but also for his warmth, humility, collegial spirit, mentorship, and abiding faith in the power of journalism to advance the public good.

On behalf of the Association, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his children, family, friends, professional associates, and all who mourn this painful loss. We pray that Almighty God grants them the strength and fortitude to bear this irreparable loss and grants the departed eternal rest.
