Photos: US-Nigeria Working Group Meets in Washington, Discuss Counterterrorism Efforts

The United States-Nigeria joint working group meeting is currently ongoing in Washington DC.

Nuhu Ribadu, national security adviser (NSA), led the Nigerian delegation at the meeting on Wednesday, while Allison Hooker, under-secretary of state, headed the US team.

Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, minister of foreign affairs; Christopher Musa, minister of defence; and Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, minister of interior, were among the Nigerian officials present at the meeting.

TheCable understands a bilateral defence meeting will be held between both countries on Thursday.

A copy of the agenda seen by TheCable included counterterrorism measures, progress, and next steps between both countries.

The bilateral working group was formulated in response to the redesignation of Nigeria as a ‘country of particular concern’ (CPC) by US President Donald Trump.

The US-Nigeria working group held their first meeting in January in Abuja.

Both countries have reiterated their commitment to upholding the principles of religious freedom and the need to take joint active, sustained measures to promote and protect the rights to freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and freedom of religion or belief for all in Nigeria.
