his is the moment a passenger plane crash-landed and burst into flames in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu – while those on board miraculously escaped with their lives.
All 36 passengers and crew were rescued from the aircraft, Somalia’s Civil Aviation Authority revealed yesterday.
A video taken from the scene showed the plane upside down after it apparently flipped over during the pilot’s attempt to land at Adan Adde International Airport.
Black smoke and flames began billowing into the air as fire trucks approached on the runway.
Firefighters were also seen hosing down the crashed plane – a Fokker-50 operated by Somalia’s domestic airline Jubba Airways.
Debris from the crash was spotted scattered across the runway.
‘We applaud the quick action of the Somalia fire brigade at the Adan Adde International Airport for their quick action in rescuing and saving lives,’ a spokesman for the Intergovernmental Authority on Development, an eight-country trade bloc that includes Somalia, The Washington Post reports.
The plane few to Mogadishu, located on the Indian Ocean coast, after travelling from the inland city of Baidoa, and crashed at around 11.30am.
Addan Avve airport is situated in an area known as the “Green Zone,” which harbours Western embassies, such the US mission as well as US-trained Somali commando squads.
Another Fokker-50 aircraft crashed at the airport in 2020 when it collided into a wall at the airport. All four occupants escaped the collision.
Dutch aerospace firm Fokker Services services and repairs the Fokker-50 planes manufactured by its Dutch predecessor company.
