A wave of anger and disbelief has swept across Southeast Nigeria following the discovery of brazen vandalism on the Second Niger Bridge, a major infrastructure project meant to symbolise national progress.

The perpetrators are believed to have removed heavy iron joints from the structure near the Asaba approach, sparking fears over the integrity of the bridge and the state of civic responsibility in the country.

The dastardly act was uncovered by a young resident who noticed the missing components and immediately alerted the police.

The unidentified youth, described by local sources as a concerned citizen, has been praised for his vigilance. Yet, the incident has provoked a broader outcry, with many questioning how such a critical piece of infrastructure could be targeted so soon after completion.

“What kind of country is this?” a visibly distressed community leader asked about the condition of anonymity. “This is very disheartening. Imagine the scale of damage – removing heavy iron joints from a bridge that cost billions of naira. We are destroying our own future.”

The Second Niger Bridge, which connects Asaba in Delta State to Onitsha in Anambra State, was inaugurated in 2023 after decades of delays.

It was designed to ease congestion on the old bridge and stimulate economic activity in the region. But repeated acts of vandalism – including theft of cables, railings, and now structural ironwork – have raised serious concerns about maintenance and security.

The Anambra Police Command visited the sport confirmed it had received a report and launched an investigation. “We are treating this with the utmost seriousness,” a police spokesman said.

“The removal of iron joints could compromise the bridge’s stability if left unchecked, and we are working to apprehend the suspects.”

The Federal Ministry of Works has yet to issue an official statement, but sources inside the ministry described the incident as “a brazen attack on national assets.”

As the investigation continues, many Nigerians are left to ponder a painful irony: a bridge built to unite the country is now being taken apart by those it was meant to serve.
