“Our Voters Showed Up, But Many Did Not Vote for Us” — Vance Blames Iran War, Cost of Living for GOP Losses

United States Vice President JD Vance has blamed the war with Iran for the Republican Party’s heavy losses in the 2026 midterm elections, saying many voters who backed Donald Trump and himself in 2024 switched their support to Democrats two years later.

Democrats won control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate in Tuesday’s elections, making substantial gains in states and congressional districts previously held by Republicans.

Reacting on Wednesday, Vance said Republican turnout itself was not the central problem, arguing that many of the party’s usual voters had turned up at the polls but voted for Democratic candidates.

“The main problem is not turnout. The main problem is that many people who voted for Trump/Vance in 2024 voted for Democrats in 2026,” he said in a lengthy post on X.

Vance said Republican strategists had closely monitored the composition of the electorate before the election and initially believed turnout figures offered some grounds for optimism.

However, he said one of the party’s data analysts warned before voting that although Republican supporters were turning out, some of them were angry with the administration and intended to vote for Democrats.

According to Vance, that assessment was borne out by the results.

He acknowledged that Republicans could have improved their economic messaging during the closing stages of the campaign but insisted that the Iran war was the dominant factor.

“But the real reason we lost is obvious to almost everyone,” Vance said.

“The reason we lost is the war. The president himself said so last night.”

Vance said an unnamed pollster he respected had asked former Trump voters who abandoned Republicans what could persuade them to return.

According to him, the four leading responses were ending the war, focusing on the cost of living and inflation, putting “America First,” and changing the United States’ relationship with Israel.

“Our voters showed up. And the above four reasons are why many of them voted for Democrats,” Vance said, attributing the finding to the pollster.

His comments echoed Trump’s own assessment of the election result.

Speaking to Fox News after the vote, Trump acknowledged that the Iran conflict had contributed to Republican losses, although he continued to defend his handling of the war.

“I think a part of it was Iran,” Trump said, arguing that voters may have supported his broader position on Iran while being unwilling to bear the immediate economic consequences, including higher fuel prices.

Vance rejected suggestions that immigration policy or proposals for amnesty should be treated as the principal explanation for the defeat.

He said Republicans instead needed an “honest conversation” about the party’s direction following the loss of congressional control.

“If you’d like to argue it was worth it, that losing the Senate for the next six years was worth it, then do so. Argue it was a worthwhile cost to pay. Agree or disagree, that’s at least honest,” he said.

“But everyone knows why we lost. And any honest conversation about where we go from here must start there.”

Despite the defeat, Vance said he remained optimistic and urged dissatisfied Republican voters to channel their anger into supporting candidates who shared their political priorities.
