The Ogun State Government has disclosed plans to introduce security lessons in school academic syllabus, adding that towards this, has concluded arrangements with security agencies  to build learners’ awareness and consciousness on security matters.

Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof Abayomi Arigbabu made this known at a meeting with the State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Abodunrin in Abeokuta.

The commissioner emphasised that the state would continue to partner with security agencies to combat vices that could pose threat to teachers and learners alike, as well as ensure that schools are crime-free and safe for all.

“Ogun State is doing its best to ensure maximum security in our schools, hence, this continuous meeting with relevant stakeholders and security agencies on different ways to curb insecurity and drive unscrupulous elements away from schools in the State’, he said.

“We have met with the Commissioner of Police, constitute committee on security in schools, while today’s meeting with NSCDC Commandant, will help us identify insecurity in schools and fashion out ways to end it”, Arigbabu said.

The commissioner advised parents and guardians to teach their wards to be upright, and avoid being found on the wrong side of the law.

The Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in his submission, said it is imperative to teach learners’ security tips, which would help them identify security threat and empower them to protect themselves and others.

Abodunrin stressed the need for individuals to be security conscious, explaining that the agency’s personnel would train some selected teachers in each school across the State, which would be cascaded down to students, noting that an avenue should be created between security agencies and the citizens for easy communication.

“Civil Defence throughout the federation has started a survey to assess the vulnerability of our schools, Ogun State is at the forefront of securing and ensuring that we do not allow any form of criminality”, he said.
