Nigerian Law School Confirms Death of 23-year-old Student

The Nigerian Law School has confirmed the death of a 23-year-old student, Faith Alayande, after she reportedly fell from the rooftop of a hostel at the institution’s Lagos Campus.

Alayande, who was originally studying at the school’s Enugu Campus, was staying in Lagos while undertaking her externship programme, according to the institution.

The Law School confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Secretary to the Council and Director of Administration, Aderonke O. Osho.

The institution said the incident occurred at about 4am on Friday, August 7, 2026.

“Preliminary information indicates that, at about 4:00 am on Friday, 7 August 2026, the student fell from the rooftop of the hostel at the Campus and, sadly, succumbed to the incident,” the statement said.

According to the Law School, Alayande had been temporarily accommodated at the Lagos Campus for the duration of her externship.

The institution said it was working with the relevant authorities and the deceased’s family to determine what led to the incident and ensure that all necessary procedures were followed.

“Management is working closely with the appropriate authorities and the family to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, ensure that all necessary procedures are duly followed, and provide further information as appropriate,” it stated.

The Lagos State Police Command had earlier confirmed the incident, saying the hostel matron reported finding the student unresponsive within the premises.

Police officers were subsequently deployed to the scene, while the student’s remains were evacuated to a morgue, according to the command.

The police also said an investigation had commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding her death.

Earlier accounts had suggested that a hostel mate and a relative of Alayande discovered a note allegedly written by her before they began searching for her. She was later found unresponsive following the reported fall.

However, the Nigerian Law School did not comment on the contents of the alleged note or provide details about what happened before the incident.

The institution expressed sadness over the death and extended its condolences to the deceased’s family, colleagues and others affected by the tragedy.

“The Management extends its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family, colleagues and all those affected by this distressing incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this difficult time,” the statement added.

The Law School appealed to the media and members of the public to respect the privacy of the bereaved family while investigations continue.

It also reaffirmed its commitment to the welfare and wellbeing of students and staff across its campuses.
