Nigerian Football Officials Resign Over Poor Performance of National Teams

After weeks of speculation and horse-trading, Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and Dr. Mohammed Sanusi have resigned as President and General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Prompt News reports.

Although the official statement from the Sunday Dankaro NFF Headquarters is yet to emerge, close associates of both men have confirmed that they have called it quits with the federation.

Prompt News reports that the bosses at the National Sports Commission, NSC, are currently working on appointing a chairman for the Normalisation Committee which will be announced soon.

Pressure on Gusau and members of his executive committee had intensified in recent months following a string of poor results involving the country’s senior and youth national teams.

One of the biggest setbacks under the administration was the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

The failure meant Nigeria missed football’s biggest global tournament for a second consecutive edition, despite Africa being allocated additional qualification slots for the expanded competition.

The crisis deepened further after the Super Falcons failed to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nigeria, who had featured at every edition of the Women’s World Cup since the inaugural tournament in 1991, saw that proud record come to an end following a 2-1 defeat to South Africa in the African play-off in Morocco.
