Nigerian-born British actress Cynthia Erivo has been cast to play the iconic role of Jesus in the upcoming musical ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ at the Hollywood Bowl.
The announcement was made via Hollywood Bowl’s official Instagram account on Wednesday, highlighting Erivo’s impressive achievements as an Emmy, Grammy, and Tony winner, as well as a three-time Oscar nominee.

The show, which will run from 1st of August to 3rd of August, is a rock opera classic written by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber.
It reimagines the final days of Jesus Christ through the eyes of Judas Iscariot. According to the organizers, the musical explores the personal struggles and relationships between Jesus, Judas, Mary Magdalene, his disciples, followers, and the Roman Empire, told entirely through song.
The production will be directed and choreographed by Colombian-American Sergio Trujillo, with Stephen Oremus serving as musical director and conductor.
Originally released as a concept album, ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ became a Broadway sensation in 1971, later grossing over $237 million worldwide by 1980.
The show ran for eight years in London between 1972 and 1980, holding the record for the longest-running West End musical before being surpassed by Cats in 1989.
Erivo, known for her powerful stage and screen performances, has been widely recognized since beginning her career in 2011, earning global acclaim and numerous accolades.
