NGX Transactions Rise 38% to N2.37tn in July, up 30% Year-on-Year

Trading activity on Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) rose significantly in July 2026, with total transactions increasing to N2.37 trillion, representing a 38.17 percent increase from the N1.71 trillion recorded in June.

The July performance also represented a 30.45 percent increase from the N1.82 trillion recorded in the corresponding period of 2025, according to the latest Domestic and Foreign Portfolio Investment Report for July 2026 released by NGX.

The increase was driven by stronger domestic participation, with domestic investors accounting for 94.4 percent of total transactions during the month, while foreign investors accounted for 5.6 percent. Domestic transactions increased by 46.39 percent from N1.53 trillion in June to N2.24 trillion in July.

Institutional investors recorded the strongest growth within the domestic segment, with transactions rising by 66.18 percent to N1.65 trillion in July from N994.49 billion in June. Retail transactions also increased by 9.42 percent to N582.44 billion from N532.31 billion.

Institutional investors accounted for about 74 percent of domestic transactions during the month, while retail investors accounted for 26 percent, reflecting increased participation across both segments of the domestic market.

Foreign investor transactions stood at N132.62 billion in July, compared with N186.79 billion in June. Foreign inflows amounted to N41.59 billion, while outflows stood at N91.03 billion, resulting in a net foreign outflow of about N49.44 billion during the month.

The combined activity across domestic and foreign investor segments brought total transactions on NGX for the first seven months of 2026 to N11.98 trillion, compared with N6.01 trillion recorded over the corresponding period of 2025, representing an increase of about 99.33 percent.

Domestic transactions accounted for N10.68 trillion, or 89.21 percent of total transactions year-to-date, while foreign transactions stood at N1.29 trillion, representing 10.79 percent.

The year-to-date figures also showed a significant increase in domestic participation, with domestic transactions more than doubling from N4.73 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025 to N10.68 trillion in 2026. The growth was supported by both institutional and retail investors.

Institutional transactions rose to N6.71 trillion in the first seven months of 2026 from N2.74 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025, while retail transactions increased to N3.97 trillion from N1.99 trillion.

Foreign transactions remained broadly stable year-on-year at N1.29 trillion, compared with N1.28 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025. Foreign inflows declined to N513.36 billion from N609.73 billion, while outflows increased to N779.43 billion from N671.56 billion.

The latest figures highlight the continued growth in activity on the Nigerian equities market, with strong participation from domestic institutional and retail investors alongside continued foreign investor activity.

As of July 2026, total transactions on NGX had reached N11.98 trillion, nearly double the N6.01 trillion recorded during the corresponding period of 2025.

Domestic transactions of N10.68 trillion recorded as of July have also surpassed the N9.27 trillion recorded for the whole of 2025, underscoring the significant expansion in market activity so far this year.
