Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode on Sunday explained that his recent consultations with some top members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) was not for personal gains but for the interest of the country.

Speaking on a political programme on Channels Television monitored by our correspondent, Fani-Kayode said the worsening security situation in the North, which is also fast spreadind in the South requires concerted efforts to find lasting solutions.

According to him, Nigeria is presently on fire and leaders across party affiliation must unite to salvage the situation.

“We must bring our people together. It’s about saving Nigeria.

“If we want to solve the security problem, we must have open negotiations across party lines. I think we need to come together, even if we need to talk to enemies and even past adversaries then we have to in order to move Nigeria forward,” he said.

Speaking on his rumoured defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the position of some APC Leaders who kicked against the move, Fani-Kayode said he had not disclosed to anyone if he was joining the ruling party, noting that he has spent over 20 years with the PDP.

“I have been the most consistent critic of this government in the last five years, that is not to say I do not have friends and associates in the APC. I am not however surprised that some people within the party feel the way they do. Talking to leaders of the APC does not also mean that I agree with the policies of the present government, I will still continue to speak against anti-people policies.

“The people that matter within a political party are those who are close to the President. These are the people who we are talking to to move the country forward. I don’t like some people in APC and some don’t like me too.

“So many people love me on both sides of the political divide and that’s a good thing. It has nothing to do with how anyone feels,” he said.

The former Minister said that though there are disagreements within the PDP, the party leadership was working towards resolving the grievances and uniting all factions ahead of 2023.
