Caleb Mutfwang, governor of Plateau, says his administration has begun prosecuting perpetrators of violence as part of efforts to curb the recurring security crisis in the state.

Speaking on Friday after meeting President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, Mutfwang said the state is making progress in restoring peace and rebuilding trust among communities.

“We’re dealing with it from the two perspectives, both kinetic and non-kinetic,” the governor said.

“We’re continuing to engage our people on the need to live in peace, on the need to continue to respect one another, and the need for respect for humanity.

“We need to rediscover our value for humanity so that there’s no need for unnecessary shedding of blood. But at the same time, we’re ensuring that justice is done. We’re beginning to prosecute people.”

The governor expressed optimism that the measures being implemented would produce lasting results.

“There’s light at the end of the tunnel. All we need is constancy. A lot of things have been put in place; we are very, very expectant that they will yield the desired result. But what we need is to be consistent and to ensure that we do not take our feet off the brakes,” he said.

Mutfwang also disclosed that consultations among stakeholders have continued following an earlier meeting with Tinubu on the security situation in Plateau.

He said a subcommittee was established to examine the issues contributing to the crisis and recommend possible solutions.

“We’ve tried to make sure that the leaders maintain cohesion so that people can see that leaders are not divided. When leaders work at cross-purposes, it slows the process of bringing peace to the state. But now we are making progress,” he said.

The governor said rebuilding trust among communities and restoring confidence in government remained central to the peace process.
