The Atlas Lions of Morocco are the first African side to qualify for consecutive World Cup quarterfinals.
They dispatched Canada 3-0 in their round-of-16 clash of the 2026 World Cup at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas, on Saturday.
A brilliant second-half brace from Azzedine Ounahi and a late stoppage-time strike from Soufiane Rahimi secured the victory for the Moroccans, despite their uncharacteristic early jitters.

Canada started as the brighter team, but Jesse Marsch’s men paid the ultimate price for failing to convert their chances against a defensively disciplined and devastatingly sharp Moroccan side.

Jonathan David had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring in the fifth minute when he found himself in space inside the box, but a momentary hesitation allowed Yassine Bounou, Morocco’s goalkeeper, to make a crucial right-handed save.
Minutes later, Tani Oluwaseyi forced another big stop from Bounou after unleashing a thumping effort from close range.
As the half progressed, tempers flared in the Houston heat. Achraf Hakimi and Richie Laryea were both cautioned following a heated tussle. Referee Michael Oliver was kept busy, handing out further bookings to Morocco’s Azzedine Ounahi and Bilal El Khannouss before the break, as the first half ended goalless despite Canada’s dominance.
Morocco returned from the interval looking completely rejuvenated and broke the deadlock just five minutes into the second half.
From a cleverly worked free-kick routine on the right flank, Hakimi opted out of crossing into the box, instead rolling a precise pass to the edge of the area. Ounahi timed his run perfectly, meeting the ball first time and rifling a powerful shot into the bottom corner past a stranded Maxime Crépeau.

Canada attempted to respond immediately, throwing bodies forward. Cyle Larin was introduced off the bench to add firepower, but the North Americans continued to lack a clinical edge in the final third. Tajon Buchanan tested Bounou with a low drive in the 79th minute, but the Moroccan shot-stopper tipped it expertly around the post.
With Canada pushed high up the pitch in search of an equaliser, the Atlas Lions exploited the spaces left behind. In the 82nd minute, a lethal counter-attack engineered by substitute Chemsdine Talbi saw Brahim Díaz cut inside the box before feeding Ounahi. The midfielder repeated his first-half composure, side-footing a first-time curler past Crépeau to double the advantage.
Morocco almost added a third shortly after when Rahimi’s looping header struck the underside of the crossbar, but the referee ruled the ball had not crossed the line.
However, the Atlas Lions would not be denied their emphatic finish. In the eighth minute of added stoppage time, with Canada completely exposed at the back, Díaz led another lightning-fast break before slipping a pass to Rahimi, who calmly slotted a left-footed strike into the far corner to make it 3-0.
Morocco marches on to the quarter-finals, where they will face either France or Paraguay.
