I often have a glass of orange juice for breakfast when I travel.
Turns out I should have a glass of orange juice every day.
According to a study recently published in Molecular Nutrition & Food Research, drinking 16 ounces of orange juice a day influences the activity of thousands of genes inside immune cells: genes that help control blood pressure, reduce inflammation, and manage the way your body processes sugar. (Granted, that’s a lot of those mini-sized hotel glasses.) But it seems to be worth it: after 60 days, many of the genes associated with inflammation and higher blood pressure were less active.

Like NAMPT, IL6, IL1B and NLRP3, which typically switch on when your body is under stress. And gene SGK1, a gene that affects your kidneys’ ability to hold onto salt.

All of which is good for you.
Other research also show the benefits of drinking orange juice:
- A study referenced in the book Phytochemicals in Citrus (there’s a page-turning title) found that daily orange juice consumption can lower blood pressure in young adults.
- A study published in Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition found that orange juice helps reduce inflammation and helps your blood vessels relax.
- A study published in Phytotherapy Research found that orange juice lowers insulin resistance (a key feature of pre-diabetes) and blood cholesterol levels.
Less inflammation. Healthier blood flow. Improvements in blood markers linked to heart health.
