Lead City University, Ibadan, proudly celebrates Mr. Olalekan Olawale Taiwo, Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Criminology and Security Studies, on his remarkable international recognition as Runner-up for Best Paper by an Academic at the 2026 International Society of Economic Criminology (ISEC) Awards.
The recognition was announced on Monday, 7 September 2026, during the ISEC Annual Conference held at Kingston University London, United Kingdom, bringing together scholars, practitioners and experts from across the world to advance research, knowledge and practice in economic criminology.
Mr. Taiwo was recognised alongside Professor Oludayo Tade of the University of Ibadan for their research paper titled, “‘Prosecuting fraud takes time and money’: understanding fraud investigation and prosecution by the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps.”

Published in the Journal of Financial Crime in 2025, the study examines the processes involved in fraud investigation and prosecution by the Oyo State Command of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), while highlighting institutional challenges that can affect effective fraud control. By examining the often-overlooked role of the NSCDC in everyday fraud investigation and prosecution, the research provides valuable empirical insight into Nigeria’s efforts to address economic and financial crime.
What makes this achievement particularly significant is the journey behind the research. The study originated from Mr Taiwo’s Master’s thesis, undertaken under the supervision of Professor Oludayo Tade during Professor Tade’s sabbatical appointment at Lead City University. The research was subsequently developed into a peer-reviewed journal article and published internationally, demonstrating how rigorous postgraduate research can evolve into impactful scholarship with global relevance.
This accomplishment is a testament to the value of research, mentorship, academic collaboration and the University’s commitment to fostering scholarship that contributes meaningfully to knowledge and society.
Lead City University warmly congratulates Mr Olalekan Olawale Taiwo and Professor Oludayo Tade on this outstanding achievement. We are proud to celebrate scholarship that begins with rigorous inquiry, addresses pressing societal concerns and earns recognition on the international academic stage.
