The Lagos State University (LASU) has condemned in strong terms the reported assault involving a student of its College of Medicine (LASUCOM), clarifying that the incident occurred at a privately owned hostel outside the University’s campus.
The University’s reaction followed the emergence of a trending video showing an altercation involving a parent and a student, which has generated public concern.
In a statement signed by the Deputy Registrar and Coordinator, Centre for Information and Public Relations, Lagos State University, Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the institution explained that the students involved are members of LASUCOM at Ikeja, but stressed that the incident did not take place within the University’s premises.

According to the University, the assaulted student promptly reported the matter to the police, after which appropriate law enforcement authorities commenced action.
LASU, however, said it has also initiated its own disciplinary procedures in accordance with the institution’s established rules and regulations.
The University Management described the alleged act of violence as unacceptable, stressing that assault, intimidation and harassment of students, staff or visitors are contrary to the values and standards of the institution.
“Any form of assault, intimidation, or harassment of students, staff, or visitors, whether within or outside the University premises, is unacceptable,” the University stated.
LASU further reaffirmed its commitment to producing graduates who combine academic excellence with good character, noting that students are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the institution’s mission of nurturing individuals who excel both academically and morally.
The University consequently urged students to exercise responsibility in their conduct, avoid situations that could expose them to danger and promptly report threats, disputes or other concerns to the appropriate authorities.
Management also appealed to parents to work constructively with the University, respect institutional boundaries and encourage their wards to uphold discipline, integrity and responsible behaviour.
The institution assured students and their parents that it remains committed to safeguarding the welfare and security of its students while providing a conducive environment for learning.
LASU maintained that appropriate measures would continue to be taken to address issues that threaten the safety, discipline and peaceful coexistence of members of the University community.
