The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has convicted a former banker, Chukwuebuka Nweke, for unauthorised withdrawal of ₦1 million from a customer’s account.

The conviction was secured by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, on Monday, October 19, 2026, before Justice Ismail Ijelu.

According to the EFCC, Nweke unlawfully accessed a desktop computer assigned to his colleague, Emmanuella Anyanwu, to facilitate the fraud.

Investigations showed that on June 21, 2025, in Lagos, the convict accessed the computer without lawful authority and withdrew ₦1 million from an account belonging to one Leelee Dumbari, domiciled in a new-generation bank.

The offence is contrary to Section 386(1) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

He was arraigned by the EFCC Lagos Zonal Directorate 1 on a one-count charge bordering on unlawful withdrawal and pleaded not guilty, leading to a full trial.

During trial, prosecution counsel, M.K. Bashir, called five witnesses, while the defence called one witness.

Delivering judgment, Justice Ijelu found Nweke guilty and sentenced him to a fine of ₦1 million to be paid within 30 days, with a default of six months in a correctional centre if he fails to pay.
