The grand finale of the 17th edition of the Annual Merchant Express, Global Cargo, and Turkish Cargo Airlines Clubs Invitational, and the third edition of the PSA Tournament 2023 hosted by the Squash Section of the Lagos Country Club, Ikeja, will be held on Saturday, September 2.

The Club Open Invitational has 14 clubs from all over Nigeria participating. The clubs include Ibadan Recreational Club, Ikoyi Club 1938, UNILAG Club, Benin Club, OAU Squash Club, Police College Squash Club, Lagos State Civil Service Club, Ivory Health Club, Yellow Dot Squash Club, Eko Club, O’trafford Squash Club, Port-Harcourt Club, Apapa Club, and the host, Lagos Country Club.

The sponsors are Global Cargo Centre, Merchant Express Cargo Airlines Limited, and Turkish Cargo Airline.

Essentially, the Lagos Country Club is hosting three tournaments: the first one is the Closed among Squash members within the Squash Section. The second one is the Open Invitational for which 14 clubs have been invited. The third is the PSA which parades 59 professionals.

Speaking to The Podium International Magazine, an elated Sir Semoore Badejo, Chairman of the Squash Section, hinted: “We started last week Monday with the closed tournament. That ended on Friday followed by a brief reception. The PSA is ongoing now. The finals will be played on Saturday. The open Invitational (14 clubs) starts on Friday and ends on Saturday”.

For the PSA, the winner goes home with N200,000, while the runner-up bags N150,000. There are also cash prizes for the last 16 players.

Four players represent each of the 14 clubs; two in the Men’s category and two in the Veteran’s Category (veteran players are above 50 years of age). Winners in these categories will go home with worthy gift items.

The participation of these 59 professionals increases their ratings in the world ranking.

According to Sir Semoore Badejo, Chairman of the Squash Section, the vision of the Squash Section is to “continue to encourage and improve the standard in the game and ultimately put the Squash Section of the Lagos Country Club, on the global map of Squash playing communities”.
