Suspected kidnappers have released the body of former Jigawa federal lawmaker Abba Anas Adamu after his family paid N50 million in ransom.

Adamu, an African Democratic Congress chieftain, and his associate Ali Tukur Gantsa were abducted on the Abuja-Kaduna highway several weeks ago while traveling from Kano to Abuja for a political meeting.

Family sources said the gunmen initially demanded N200 million, later reduced to N100 million, before settling for N50 million. They reportedly dumped Adamu’s body on the outskirts of Jere after negotiations.

According to a family source, Adamu, who had asthma and hypertension, died in captivity after being without medication for days. His health worsened under the stress of captivity, the source said.

Gantsa remains alive and was with Adamu’s body en route to Kano as burial arrangements are being made.

The Jigawa ADC is yet to issue an official statement.
