Gunmen, believed to be members of a secessionist group, have kidnapped some reporters on their way to cover the Africa Cup of Nations qualifier between hosts Super Eagles and The Mediterranean Knights of Libya holding on Friday in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The abduction reportedly took place in Isseke, a notorious community in the Ihiala local government area.

While some sources claim the incident occurred on Wednesday, others indicate it happened early Thursday morning.

According to a source, one victim has been reported killed, and the whereabouts of the others remain unknown.

Spokesman of the state Police command, Deputy Superintendent Tochukwu Ikenga confirmed the incident, stating that a team has been deployed to search for the victims.

“As I speak to you, a joint operation is ongoing. We are however not sure if they are in captivity or were able to escape”, he said

Ikenga further said that he has no information of the rescue of any of the victims.
