- Brentford recorded their first win over Chelsea since 1939 with a 4-1 rout
- Brentford came from behind to stun the hosts with four second-half goals
- Thomas Tuchel blamed several factors for their abject display on Saturday
Thomas Tuchel blamed Chelsea‘s lack of maturity, tired minds after international travel and even the British weather after watching his team slump to a thrashing at home against Brentford.
‘We lacked maturity in our defending,’ said Blues boss Tuchel. ‘We were not aware of the danger in these moments which is also very strange for us. We got punished and that’s also not normal. It’s a summary of strange events. It’s on us, it’s our fault.
‘We felt leggy, which is normal after the break. We struggled in the beginning. I felt us more mentally tired, not fresh enough. Also, yesterday, we were wearing gloves and it was snowing during training. Today, it was very, very warm.
‘It’s more difficult for us than for them to play as an underdog and be well prepared for this match. We were very prepared but we prepared in one half of a training session. ‘It is more difficult but in the context of all this, I’m OK with the first half and the half-time speech as like this. Just a reminder, keep ongoing.
‘Remind them where the spaces are and where we want to accelerate, stay patient and take more risk and it will come with more fluidity. And it did. We started very well the second half.’
Chelsea took the lead, early in the second half with a 40-yard screamer by Antonio Rudiger but Vitaly Janelt levelled within two minutes and Christian Eriksen gave Brentford the lead with his first goal for the club.
Janelt’s second was the third scored by the Bees in 10 minutes and Yoane Wissa added a fourth to complete the rout.
‘We were in the lead and in charge so I didn’t see that coming,’ said Tuchel.
‘I felt we were getting better. We deserved the first goal, a beautiful goal and I don’t know why the next 10 minutes completely cost us the game.
‘We stopped defending and gave away three goals which is untypical and killed the game for us. I don’t know why. After so many wins and good results, I refuse to make a drama out of it. Why should we? It’s hard to take but very unusual for us. We will refocus on Monday.’
