How Nigeria’s 12 Army Divisions are Spread Across Six Geopolitical Zones

President Bola Tinubu’s recent approval of the expansion of the Nigerian Army from eight to 12 divisions has significantly reshaped the country’s military command structure in a move aimed at strengthening internal security and improving operational effectiveness across Nigeria.

The expansion, which led to the creation of the 5 Division, Makurdi; 9 Division, Ilorin; 10 Division, Jalingo; and 83 Division, Benin City, is expected to improve command and control, enhance troop deployment and boost the military’s response to evolving security challenges, FG had stated..

While the newly created divisions are still being integrated into the Army’s structure, the existing divisions continue to serve as the backbone of military operations across the country’s six geopolitical zones.

The new command structure distributes the Army’s 12 divisions across the six geopolitical zones, with the North-East having the highest concentration of three divisions, while the North-West, North-Central, South-West and South-South each have two and the South-East has one.

Below is a breakdown of all 12 Nigerian Army divisions, their headquarters, operational areas and formation types.

Here, PUNCH Online takes a look at the eight existing divisions with details obtained from the Army website alongside the new ones.

1 Division – Kaduna

Headquartered in Kaduna, 1 Division was established during the Nigerian Civil War.

According to the Nigerian Army, it is responsible for securing the North-Western flank of Nigeria and safeguarding the country’s borders within its area of responsibility.

The division is a mechanized infantry formation supported by combat support and combat service support units.

2 Division – Ibadan

Based in Ibadan, Oyo State, 2 Division was also established during the Civil War.

It oversees security operations across the South-Western flank of the country and border security within its operational area.

It is likewise a mechanized infantry formation with affiliated combat support units.

3 Division – Jos

Headquartered in Jos, Plateau State, 3 Division was established during the Civil War and is responsible for the Northern Eastern flank of Nigeria, according to the Army.

Unlike the first two divisions, it is an armoured division, backed by combat support and combat service support units.

5 Division – Makurdi (new)

The newly established 5 Division, headquartered in Makurdi, Benue State, will oversee military operations in Benue, Nasarawa and Kogi states.

The division is expected to strengthen security across the North-Central region by improving command and operational response to security threats.

The Nigerian Army has yet to officially publish details of its formation type.

6 Division – Port Harcourt

Established on November 8, 2016, 6 Division is headquartered in Port Harcourt.

The division is tasked with securing the Niger Delta and coastal region, including the protection of Nigeria’s critical oil and gas infrastructure.

The Army website does not specify its formation type.

7 Division – Maiduguri

With headquarters in Maiduguri, 7 Division became operational on August 22, 2013 to combat insurgency, terrorism and armed banditry in the North-East.

Its operational area covers Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states. The Army describes it as the youngest among the original six divisions.

Its motto is “Doggedness and Boldness.”

The formation type is not specified on the Army website.

8 Division – Sokoto

The Nigerian Army website identifies 8 Division as one of its operational formations but does not provide details regarding its headquarters, operational responsibilities or formation type on the page currently available.

9 Division – Ilorin (new)

The newly created 9 Division, headquartered in Ilorin, Kwara State, will oversee military operations in Kwara and Niger states as part of the Army’s expanded command structure.

Its formation type has not yet been officially published.

10 Division – Jalingo (new)

Headquartered in Jalingo, Taraba State, 10 Division will coordinate military operations in Taraba and Adamawa states, strengthening security coverage in the North-East and North-Central corridor.

The Army has not yet disclosed its formation type.

81 Division – Lagos

Headquartered in Lagos, 81 Division replaced the former Lagos Garrison Command in 2000.

It is responsible for security in Lagos and Ogun states, described by the Army as Nigeria’s economic nerve centres, while also securing the borders within its area of responsibility.

It is a mechanized infantry formation with combat support and combat service support units.

82 Division – Enugu

Established in 1975, 82 Division is headquartered in Enugu and oversees military operations across the South-Eastern and South-Southern flanks of Nigeria while securing the borders within its operational area.

It is a composite division with affiliated combat support and combat service support units.

83 Division – Benin City (new)

The newly established 83 Division, headquartered in Benin City, Edo State, is responsible for Edo, Delta and Bayelsa states, further expanding the Army’s presence in the South-South.

The Nigerian Army is yet to publish details of its formation type.

Tradoc

The Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Nigerian Army (NA) was established as a senior think-tank of the Nigerian Army in 1981. It is located in Minna Niger State. Minna which is the capital of Niger state is on 3.200 east and longitude 11.30o north.

Minna is about 150km away from the Federal Capital and is endowed with arable land that is good for farming and animal husbandry.

TRADOC is reputably known as the alternate NA Headquarters and offers advices, ideas and probable solutions to training and operational challenges of the NA.

When numerous divisions are committed concurrently in the field, TRADOC automatically acts as a Corps Headquarters to coordinate, direct and control operational exigencies of the divisions.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army on Wednesday said the new formations would begin operations after attaining Initial Operational Capability, while deliberate measures would be taken to achieve Full Operational Capability.

With the addition of the four new divisions, the NA expects a more decentralised command structure capable of responding more rapidly to security threats, enhancing border protection and improving operational efficiency nationwide.
