Despite the concerted efforts by Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, to ensure that peace returns to his State, armed hoodlums were still on a rampage on Sunday.

Soludo over the weekend decried the state of insecurity in the South East and the weekly sit-at-home which has impacted negatively on the economic fortunes of the state and the people.

In a meeting with the Joint Body of South East Council of Traditional Rulers and Bishops/Archbishops on the State of Insecurity in Igboland in Awka on Saturday, the governor asked the hoodlums to sheath their swords and work for peace.

He asserted it was time to dialogue with everyone including all the actors engaged in the agitations in the region.

But apparently, his plea seems to have fallen on deaf ears, at least for now, as gunmen killed two officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) in the State on Sunday. The incident happened along Igboukwu-Ezinifite-Uga road in Aguata local government area around 2.30 pm.

An eyewitness said that the killed FRSC officers were on patrol operations when the gunmen struck.

Bisi Kazeem, Assistant Corps Marshal, who is the Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps, confirmed the attack in a statement on Sunday evening.

Titled, “Two operatives shot dead as unknown gunmen attack FRSC patrol team in Anambra State,” the statement read: “A team of Patrol Operatives of the Federal Road Safety Corps comprising of an Officer, a driver, and two other staff on patrol operations have been attacked by unknown gunmen leading to the death of two personnel with one sustaining severe injuries.

“The Corps Marshal, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi who was visibly touched says he decried the attack while condoling the families of the deceased staff, the Unit Commander and Staff of Igbo-Uku Command, and the entire Management and Staff of the Corps over the loss and prayed for their souls to rest in peace.

“Oyeyemi also assured that the Corps is already working with the Nigerian Police Force and other relevant security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators of this wicked act are arrested and allowed to face the full weight of the law.”
