Gunmen Kidnap Son-in-Law of Veteran Journalist Ayo Akinyemi in Ogun

The son-in-law of veteran journalist and former Managing Director of the defunct _Monitor_ newspaper, Ayo Akinyemi, was kidnapped on Sunday afternoon in Ikenne, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State.

The victim was identified as Oreoluwa Osunuga, owner of a farm settlement in the town.

—How the Abduction Happened—

A report by The Eagle Online said that Osunuga was attacked by gunmen while driving out of his farm.

He was reportedly on his way to buy fuel and deliver poultry products when the assailants intercepted him.

The gunmen forcefully whisked him away and abandoned his vehicle at the scene. As at the time of filing this report, the location where Osunuga was taken to remained unknown to his family and staff members.

—N500m Ransom Demand—

According to sources, the kidnappers contacted the family using Osunuga’s mobile phone and demanded N500 million for his release.

—Police Response—

The Divisional Police Officer, Ikenne Division, led operatives to the scene shortly after the incident and recovered the victim’s 2017 Toyota Highlander SUV, which was later driven to the station.

Confirming the incident about 9:50pm on Sunday, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP Bode Ojajuni, said the police had launched a proactive operation to rescue the victim.

“We are already on the trail of the kidnappers. Progress is being made and we are confident of a positive outcome,” he assured.

The abduction has sparked concern in Ikenne, with residents calling for increased security around farms and rural communities in the area.

Kidnapping for ransom has remained a major security challenge in parts of Ogun State, with farmers and business owners often targeted.

The police said investigation is ongoing.
