Popular Nigerian gospel musician Asu Ekiye has disclosed that his 28-year marriage to Kunemofa Asu ended in 2025, bringing an end to a union that produced four children.
Ekiye, widely known as the “Prince of the Niger Delta,” made the disclosure on Thursday in a Facebook post, explaining that he had chosen to speak publicly about the separation a year after the marriage ended.
The singer, who married Kunemofa in 1998, did not reveal what led to the breakdown of the relationship.
Instead, Ekiye said he had deliberately kept the matter private while allowing himself time to process the end of the marriage before making a public announcement.
He described the development as the closure of an important chapter of his life and said he was approaching the transition with acceptance rather than bitterness.
“After 28 years of a deeply personal journey of growth, experience and reflection, I wish to announce, with a profound sense of sobriety and quiet resignation, that my marriage to Kunemofa Asu has come to an end,” he said.
According to the singer, the decision to announce the separation at this time was deliberate, as he wanted to avoid making the disclosure while emotions surrounding the development were still fresh.
“For the avoidance of doubt, this marriage ended a year ago. I have deliberately chosen to make this announcement only now, after allowing time to bring the perspective, clarity and quiet acceptance that such a deeply personal transition deserves,” Ekiye said.
He added, “I choose to close this chapter with grace, gratitude and dignity, while looking ahead to the possibilities of a new season.”
The announcement marks a significant turn in the personal life of the musician, whose public image over the years has included his family and Christian faith.
Ekiye had previously spoken warmly about his relationship with Kunemofa.
In a 2018 interview, the singer said their relationship did not follow the conventional dating pattern before marriage.
He explained that they connected through shared aspirations, spirituality, intellectual compatibility and mutual attraction.
Ekiye also recalled proposing to Kunemofa on the street, saying she reacted with considerable excitement before eventually accepting his proposal two weeks later.
At the time, he described her as possessing the qualities he had desired in a life partner, including beauty, spirituality, intelligence, focus, enterprise and a strong maternal disposition.
The couple subsequently built a family of four children during their nearly three decades together.
Ekiye became prominent in Nigeria’s gospel music scene following the release of his 2001 album, Woekilemo.
He subsequently established a catalogue featuring songs such as Eniye, Dey by My Side, Seiyo, Miyebibo, Kareyo, featuring gospel singer Eben, Ebikamo and Yemiyemo.
Despite confirming that the marriage ended a year ago, Ekiye gave no indication of any immediate plans regarding his personal life, choosing instead to focus his message on closure, gratitude and the beginning of what he described as a “new season.”
