“Today is a good day for justice in America but we must not rest until persons of colour can enjoy the full benefits of their personhood and citizenship.

NIDO expresses hope that the rare conviction of the police officer for the extra-judicial killing will lead to Police reforms that would ” scrubbed off all traces of institutionalized racism.

We call for bi-partisan action on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act for a systemic overhaul of policing practices to eliminate knee jerk discrimination while fostering transparency and accountability,  the statement read in part.

The 45-year-old former Minneapolis Police officer, Derek Chauvin,  was charged with second-degree murder and two other charges after he was filmed with his knee on George Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes during an arrest in May last year.
