Filmmaker Dimbo Atiya is Dead

Dimbo Atiya, the Nigerian filmmaker, producer and director, is dead.

Mofe Duncan, the actor, confirmed Atiya’s demise in a tribute shared via Instagram on Thursday.

He said the filmmaker’s passing had left him “devastated” and described him as one of the “greatest minds” in the entertainment industry.

“God no, not Dimbo. No!!! No!!! No!!! I am devastated. One of the greatesr minds of the entertainment industry,” he wrote.

The cause of his death has not yet been made public.

Following the news, several of Atiya’s colleagues took to social media to honour his memory.

Among them was actress Sophia Alakija, who shared photos and videos of the director on Instagram.

She described his death as “one hell of a shock,” calling him “a gem” and “one of the most genuine to have walked the earth”.

Alakija also credited Atiya for believing in her long before many others did.

“One human I could bear my chest and say was genuinely proud of me. He started believing in me in since 2017 and never stopped,” she wrote.

In his tribute, director Taiwo Shittu wrote: “We saw and spoke to each other more this year than any other year. I still remembered the last thing he said to me when we spoke about the project I was working on and he knew how important that project was to me and his exact words were ‘I’m here if you need me for anything. Rest in , Dimbo Atiya. You made your mark here.”

Atiya was known for showcasing northern Nigerian culture in his films and television projects. He produced over 500 episodes of TV shows and five feature films.

His body of work also includes ‘Sons of the Caliphate’, ‘The Plan’, ‘Halita’, ‘Still Falling’, ‘Drawing Strength’, ‘Strong’ and ‘War: Wrath and Revenge’.

His contributions to the industry earned him several accolades. In 2022, he won the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) for Best Africa Magic Original Drama Series for producing ‘Halita’.
