FG to revive Ajaokuta Steel Company for the production of military hardware

Today marks a significant milestone in Nigerian history as the Federal Ministry of Defence and Federal Ministry of Steel Development initiate the long-awaited revival of the Ajaokuta Steel Company. This endeavor is poised to revolutionize the country’s defense capabilities and bolster its industrial sector.

In a meeting held at the Ministry of Defence, Dr. Matawalle and his counterpart, the Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Prince Shuaibu Abubakar Audu, deliberated on a proposed partnership to harness the potential of Ajaokuta Steel Company for the production of military hardware. Both parties have unanimously agreed to formalize this collaboration through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

Expressing profound disappointment at the neglect suffered by the Ajaokuta Steel Company in previous administrations, Dr. Matawalle emphasized the transformative impact of investing in this vital asset. He underscored the imperative for Nigeria to become self-reliant in steel production and reduce its dependence on costly imports of military equipment.

“It is disheartening how Nigeria is spending billions of dollars annually on importing military hardware,” – Dr. Matawalle.

Under the auspices of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON), the Ministry of Defence will work in tandem with the Federal Ministry of Steel Development to breathe new life into the dormant Ajaokuta Steel Company. This collaborative effort not only promises to enhance national security but also to stimulate economic growth by generating millions of employment opportunities for Nigerians.

The Permanent Secretaries of both ministries were present at the meeting, underscoring the gravity of this initiative. They have been tasked with drafting the MOU, signifying the commitment of the government to expedite the revitalization process.

The Honourable Minister of Steel Development, Abubakar Shuaibu Audu, conveyed his gratitude to Dr. Matawalle for the warm reception and affirmed his ministry’s unwavering commitment to fostering closer collaboration.

This historic partnership between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Steel Development heralds a new era of industrial resurgence and national security for Nigeria. The government remains steadfast in its resolve to leverage indigenous resources for the collective prosperity and security of the nation.

Ademola AKINBOLA is an author, publisher, trainer, digital marketing strategist, and a brand development specialist with nearly three decades of experience in the areas of branding, communication, corporate reputation management, business development, organizational change management, and digital marketing.

He is the Founder and Head Steward at BrandStewards Limited, a brand and reputation management consultancy. He is also the Publisher of The Podium International Magazine, Ile-Oluji Times, and Who’s Who in Ile-Oluji.
