FG Inaugurates Remodelled Kano Airport Domestic Terminal

The federal government has commissioned the remodelled Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo domestic terminal at the Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport (MAKIA).

Festus Keyamo, minister of aviation and aerospace development, commissioned the terminal on Tuesday, describing the project as part of the federal government’s efforts to modernise aviation infrastructure under President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda.

The domestic terminal is named after Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo, an aviation pioneer from Kano, in recognition of his contributions to the development of Nigeria’s aviation industry.

Speaking at the event, Keyamo said Kano remains strategically important to Nigeria’s economy and aviation sector, describing the state as the commercial hub of northern Nigeria.

“The Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport remains the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. Kano, for us, remains the commercial heartbeat of Northern Nigeria. That is why we have earmarked Kano for major upgrades,” the minister said.

He said Tinubu had approved N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway at the airport.

The aviation minister said the runway project is expected to improve operational efficiency and position Kano among the world’s leading international airports.

“The president has approved the sum of N46 billion for the resurfacing and reconstruction of the second runway so that the Kano Airport can compete with other international airports around the world,” Keyamo said.

He also disclosed that the upgrade of the airport’s Hajj terminal has commenced, with contractors already on site.

“We have also begun the upgrade of the Hajj Terminal. That project is ongoing, and contractors are already on site as we speak,” he said.

According to the minister, the remodelling of the Muhammadu Adamu Dankabo domestic terminal forms part of the federal government’s broader aviation modernisation agenda aimed at improving passenger comfort, operational efficiency, safety and service delivery across Nigeria’s airports.

Olubunmi Kuku, managing director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), said the upgraded terminal reflects the authority’s commitment to providing world-class airport facilities and improving passengers’ travel experience.

Abdullahi Ganduje, chairman of the FAAN board, commended the president and Keyamo for prioritising aviation development in Kano, saying the ongoing projects would further strengthen the state’s position as northern Nigeria’s leading commercial and aviation hub.

The event was attended by Haruna Dederi, Kano commissioner for transport, who represented Abba Yusuf, governor of Kano; Mariya Mahmoud, minister of state for the federal capital territory (FCT); Ahmed Tijani, director of air transport management at the ministry of aviation and aerospace development; FAAN directors; and aviation stakeholders.

The N46 billion is part of the N900 billion approved by the federal executive council (FEC) in August 2025 for rehabilitation of airports in Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kano.
