The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has deployed Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams to worship centres, recreational facilities and other public venues ahead of the 2026 Eid-el-Kabir celebrations.

The deployment is part of strengthened security measures introduced by the Command to ensure a peaceful and hitch-free celebration across the FCT.

In a statement on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Sanusi, said the Command had intensified security operations across the territory.

She said the Command, in collaboration with other security agencies, including the military, Department of State Services, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Federal Road Safety Corps and the Nigerian Immigration Service, had activated a joint security arrangement codenamed “Operation Sweep FCT.”

According to her, the operation has been divided into strategic sectors across the territory, with security personnel carrying out continuous patrols and coordinated operations aimed at preventing and responding to criminal activities.

“As part of the Command’s preventive security strategy, Explosive Ordnance Disposal teams have also been directed to conduct proactive sweeps of designated worship centres, recreational facilities, and other venues expected to host large gatherings,” the statement said.

The Command added that intelligence-led operations and raids on identified flashpoints and locations linked to illicit drug activities had also been ordered, with directives that officers conduct all operations professionally and within the law.

The police commissioner also held a strategic Zoom meeting with Divisional Police Officers and Divisional Crime Officers across the Command, charging them to remain vigilant and professional before, during and after the celebrations.

He emphasised the need for increased visibility policing, prompt response to distress calls and stronger community engagement, while warning that unprofessional conduct by officers would not be tolerated.

The FCT Police Command urged residents to remain law-abiding and security-conscious, and to report suspicious activities through its emergency lines: 08032003913 and 07057337653.
