The evil spectre came. It threatened. It failed.
Nigeria has once again defeated Ebola.
The World Health Organisation, WHO, on Monday declared Nigeria Ebola-free after the country’s only confirmed patient and her husband were evacuated to Switzerland.

It was a short, sharp visit by the deadly virus — and a swift, clinical knockout by Nigerian doctors.
WHO Regional Director for Africa, Prof. Mohamed Janabi, hailed the feat as “a proud moment for Nigeria,” praising Nigerian health workers, doctors and emergency responders for their world-class handling of the crisis.
The index patient, a Swiss national, was successfully managed through the most acute phase of the disease, stabilised, and cleared for evacuation. Her husband, who never showed symptoms, was evacuated with her as Contact 53.
“With the evacuation of the patient and her husband, Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases,” Janabi declared.
Coordinating Minister of Health, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, confirmed the patient was stable, conscious and communicating before departure, though still under strict infectious disease protocols.
The war is won, but vigilance remains. Nigeria continues to monitor 52 contacts, while Switzerland takes over care of the index case.
Once again, Nigeria has shown Africa and the world how to confront a public health nightmare — and win.
