A whopping 63% of those who watched the ABC News presidential debate between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris told CNN on Tuesday that Harris won the debate.
While 50% of viewers told CNN they predicted Harris would win the debate, that figure rose substantially after the event, with 63% of viewers saying the vice president beat Trump on the debate stage.
“Who won the debate? The overall number here, overwhelmingly, Kamala Harris did,” said CNN political director David Chalian after the debate on Tuesday evening:

63%, you see there on your screen, say Kamala Harris won the debate, only 37% say Donald Trump won the debate, and that is quite different than the expectations going into this among this group of debate watchers in this poll. We asked folks going into the debate, “Who do you expect to win the debate?” Well, it was 50-50. 50% expected Harris, 50% expected Trump to win the debate. That was before the debate and we just showed you where it ended up afterwards. 63% to 37%.
Chalian noted, “This is a complete reversal from what we saw in June. Compare these numbers to Biden. In June, you see that it was 67% to 33%. Two-thirds thinking Trump won, only a third thinking Biden won. A complete reversal in just a few months.”
Reacting to the ABC News debate on Tuesday evening, CNN anchor Chris Wallace argued the result was “just as devastating” to Trump as the June debate had been to President Joe Biden, who dropped out of the race just a month later.
“Jake, I didn’t think I was ever going to witness a debate as devastating as the one that you and Dana moderated back in June, where Joe Biden basically tanked his reelection campaign,” Wallace told CNN anchor Jake Tapper. “I think tonight was just as devastating.”
