Mushroom coffees could be able to protect your mental health from devastating illnesses like dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease, according to one expert. Elliot Webb, from Urban Farm-It, highlighted how lion’s mane mushrooms in particular are rich in a certain compound that stimulates the production of nerve growth factor.

This factor has been known to play a vital role in preventing cognitive decline as it maintains neurons and makes new connections in the brain. The expert added: “Lion’s mane not only may boost energy but also may support long-term brain health. Its neuroprotective properties could improve memory, focus, and even may help reduce the risk of developing dementia. This is particularly important as our ability to form new neural connections declines with age.”
Multiple studies have proven lion’s mane’s positive impact on dementia, with a 2020 study finding that 1 gram a day for 49 weeks created “significant improvements in cognitive function” for people with mild Alzheimer’s disease. Elliot added: “By supporting brain cell growth, it may help slow the progression of conditions like Alzheimer’s. While more research is needed, early studies are very promising.”

Many people turn to tea, coffee and energy drinks for their hit of caffeine to get them through the day, despite already being very familiar with some of the downsides like caffeine crashes, irritability and jitters. However, switching out your java for mushrooms could also bypass all of this.
Elliot highlighted how lion’s mane mushrooms can support steady energy levels throughout the day, minimising any jitters or crashes, while also being proven to help mental and physical performance. It also doesn’t have to be in the form of a beverage as the expert noted lion’s mane can be sprinkled onto meals as a garnish or even taken as supplements.
