These are some of the figures behind the latest interventions of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), drawing attention to the church’s expanding role in healthcare and humanitarian assistance.

The interventions cut across three very different areas of need — providing critical medical equipment at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH), supporting the evacuation of Nigerians in distress in South Africa, and investing heavily in advanced surgical technology through the Redeemer’s Health Village.

At UBTH in Edo State, the RCCG donated three complete sets of dialysis machines, providing additional capacity for the treatment of patients with serious kidney-related conditions.

For patients whose kidneys can no longer adequately filter waste and excess fluid from the blood, dialysis is a vital treatment.

The availability of additional machines can make a significant difference in the number of patients a hospital is able to attend to.

The church’s intervention has also extended beyond Nigeria’s borders.

The RCCG donated $265,854 to support the evacuation of distressed Nigerians from South Africa.

The money was used to facilitate the purchase of 500 one-way air tickets for Nigerians who required assistance to return home.

The Federal Government, through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, acknowledged the donation and expressed appreciation to the church for its contribution to the evacuation exercise.

Then there is the church’s investment in specialised healthcare.

Through the Redeemer’s Health Village, the RCCG has committed $4 million to its robotic surgery programme, bringing advanced surgical technology into its healthcare development plans.

The investment comes at a time when access to highly specialised medical treatment remains a major concern in Nigeria, with many patients travelling abroad for procedures that are not readily available locally.

Robotic-assisted surgery is designed to support surgeons in performing certain procedures with enhanced precision and control.

The programme is expected to strengthen the range of specialised services available through the health facility.

Put together, the figures tell a story of an organisation spending substantial resources on very practical needs.

One intervention is helping to improve access to dialysis treatment. Another is helping Nigerians in distress get back home. A third is aimed at expanding the country’s capacity for advanced surgical care.
