The Army Council has approved the promotion of 108 senior officers to the ranks of Major General and Brigadier General, marking a significant development in the leadership structure of the Nigerian Army.

In a statement, Director Army Public Relations Major General Onyema Nwachukwu said the decision, announced on Thursday, December 19, 2024, includes the elevation of 35 Brigadier Generals to the rank of Major General and 73 Colonels to the rank of Brigadier General.

Prominent officers promoted to Major General include, Brig Gen A Garba, Acting Provost Marshal of the Nigerian Army. Brig Gen UM Alkali, Deputy Chief of Administration, Directorate of Veteran Affairs. Brig Gen AGL Haruna, Acting GOC, 7 Division, and Commander, Sector 1, North-East Operation HADIN KAI.
Brig Gen IA Ajose, Acting GOC, 8 Division, and Commander, Sector 2, North-West Operation FANSAN YAMA. Brig Gen LG Lepdung, Commander, Operation WHIRL STROKE. Brig Gen VD Beryo, Commander, Nigerian Army Special Forces School.

The list also includes officers from various directorates, operational commands, and special units across the country.

Notable Colonels elevated to the rank of Brigadier General are Col SM Iliya, Commander, 43 Engineers Brigade, Col NE Udofia, Headquarters, Nigerian Army Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Col NS Onuchukwu, Chief Medical Director, 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Col IP Omoke, Directorate of Procurement, Office of the Chief of Army Staff, Col OU Okwuosa, Commander, 2 Division Medical Hospital and Services. Others promoted include officers from various operational units, defense agencies, and specialized institutions.

Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, the Chief of Army Staff, congratulated the newly promoted officers and urged them to justify their elevation by demonstrating exemplary leadership and innovative strategies to address Nigeria’s contemporary security challenges.

He reminded the officers of their oath of allegiance, emphasizing loyalty to the constitution and unwavering commitment to the defense of the nation.

The promotions reflect the Army’s dedication to strengthening its leadership cadre and addressing evolving security dynamics in the country.
