For the first time, Apple’s iPhone surpasses Samsung to become the world’s top-selling smartphone, ending Samsung’s 12-year leadership, according to data.

As per the International Data Corporation’s data disclosed on Monday, in 2023, the iPhone surpassed Samsung, selling 234.6 million units compared to the South Korean company’s 226.6 million units.

Apple, the US tech giant, secured a 20.1 percent market share, outpacing Samsung’s 19.4 percent, according to the IDC.

Analysts from the influential market tracker attributed Apple’s success to the popularity of premium devices like the iPhone.

They also noted a growing fragmentation in the Android smartphone market, citing competition from lower-end Samsung rivals such as Transsion and Xiaomi, as well as Honor and Google.

The IDC highlighted the impact of Huawei’s well-received offerings in China on Samsung’s declining sales. The sales data preceded the anticipated release of new Samsung models at an event in California on Wednesday.

IDC reported a 3.2 percent decline in global smartphone shipments to 1.17 billion units in 2023. However, the group mentioned that the industry was showing signs of recovery following a sluggish period.

“Growth in the second half of the year has cemented the expected recovery for 2024,” the IDC said in a statement.
