It’s been a while I told a story. A story is better than a thousand words. Indulge me today to tell this one that speaks to access. Many atime, opportunity disguises as roadblock for lack of access, waiting to be tapped only by those who ask. Borrowing from the scriptures, if you don’t seek, you may not find.
This happened many years ago and the conversation was between a distant friend and I. There was something he needed from a highly placed personality (VIP) that remained only a wish because of lack of access. What he didn’t imagine was that I was the access he needed to access his desire.

My friend had no faintest knowledge that I have access to this VIP. It happened that the VIP had needed something before that was within my discretion and influence. The exercise of my discretion on that occasion granted me unfettered access to the VIP. I could call him on one dial and I would get a response. That is the power of access.
All I could mutter was a smile when I heard my friend lament how he wished he could have access to the VIP, in whose hands what he needed was sitting. I asked my friend if he would want me to call the VIP because I have access to him. In disbelief, he said yes, still thinking it was a prank. There and then, I made the call and tabled his request. The rest, they say, is history. This is a true life story.
If any man (or woman) tells you s/he is self made, ask for further details. No man born of a woman is self-made. The smartest of men at the top had access to somebody or something that provided the opportunity he tapped on his way up. What we cannot argue is that some are better at managing access than others. This is the crux of the message this piece is meant to touch.
It is common to hear people attribute their success to God when they want to save the details. God is the enabler, nothing happens without His knowledge but you also need access to God through prayers. When he answers, He sends an angel in human form. If you are not attentive, you may miss the vessel God chooses to answer your prayers.
Don’t ever underestimate the power of access. The unassuming person sitting next to you may have in his hand what would take you years to get. If you don’t ask, you may not know. Sometimes, it is not about social or economic status. Not age or physique. Not even by intellect or the gift of the garb. Access is no respecter of rules and protocols.
A friend to the son of the CEO could get from the CEO what others would struggle to get. This is not because he is smarter but because in his friend he has access on whose back he can ride to meet the CEO in his private moment without the usual protocols. The President’s daughter will walk through heavily guarded gates just by virtue of her birthright.
If you have the gift of access, you have a big weapon in your hand. Use it wisely. You may combine wealth with riches, but if you have to spend money to buy everything you need in life, then you are not as rich as you think. Bob Marley said some people are so poor all they have is money.
When Accountants count net worth, they add goodwill. It is because goodwill has value. Access too, like goodwill, is spendable, just like currency.
