A 23-year-old Nigerian medical graduate, Nnani Adaobi Marian, has died after suffering severe injuries in a Russian airstrike in Kharkiv, Ukraine, just days before she was due to receive her medical degree.

Marian, a final-year student of Kharkiv National Medical University, was critically injured during a Russian aerial bombardment on June 29 in the Kholodnohirskyi district of Kharkiv. The attack was part of a wave of strikes that reportedly claimed 14 lives across the Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia and Kharkiv regions, while at least 98 others were injured.

In a statement released on Sunday, the university confirmed that Marian succumbed to her injuries despite intensive medical efforts in both Ukraine and Germany.
“As a result of enemy shelling, Nnani Adaobi Marian was seriously injured. Doctors fought for her life until the last moment: first in Kharkiv, and later in Germany.

Everyone sympathised, helped, and hoped for her recovery, but, unfortunately, despite all the efforts of the doctors, they could not save her,” the university said.

According to the institution, Marian joined Kharkiv National Medical University in 2020 and quickly established herself as one of its outstanding students. She was recognised for her academic excellence, discipline and dedication to the medical profession.

Beyond the classroom, she actively sought to broaden her knowledge through international training programmes. In 2024, she participated in an internship at the University of Cambridge, followed by another at Biruni University in 2025, where she strengthened her clinical skills and contributed to scientific research.

The university paid glowing tribute to her, describing her as a compassionate, intelligent and hardworking young woman whose passion for medicine inspired those around her.
“Nnani Adaobi Marian was a bright, sincere and kind-hearted person. She easily found common ground with people and was distinguished by her thirst for knowledge, hard work and sincere desire to help others,” the statement added.

Reports indicate that Marian was travelling with her friend, Fatima Huseynova, for a graduation photoshoot when the airstrike struck. Both students were scheduled to graduate the following day.
Fatima was killed instantly in the attack, while Marian sustained life-threatening injuries and was rushed to hospital before being transferred to Germany for advanced treatment. Despite the combined efforts of medical teams in both countries, she eventually lost the battle for her life.

One of the aerial bombs reportedly exploded on a roadway in Kharkiv’s Kholodnohirskyi district, leaving 12 other people injured.

Marian’s death has cast a shadow over what should have been a joyous milestone, bringing a heartbreaking end to the dreams of a promising young Nigerian doctor whose life and career were cut short by the ongoing war in Ukraine.
