The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) has suspended one of its members, Mr. Steve Osuji, for violating the “off the record” provision in the Code of Ethics for journalists in Nigeria.

The suspended member, however, opted to keep mute over the development as he refused to respond to messages sent to have his reaction to the suspension order issued out by the Guild on Friday to stop parading himself as a member for the next one year.

The suspension order contained in a press statement jointly signed by Eze Anaba (President) and Mr. Onuoha Ukeh (General Secretary), the Guild explained that there was an agreement that the keynote address delivered by the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS), Mr. Adeola Oluwatosin Ajayi, at its 25th Biennial National Convention in Enugu, was off-the-record and not for publication.

 The statement added that despite anouncement of this agreement, Osuji, a senior journalist and member of the Guild published an article based on the presentation on his social media platforms, breaching the Code of Ethics on confidentiality.

The statement stated that the Guild as a professional body ” takes this professional misconduct seriously” and therefore announced the suspension of Osuji from the professional body for one year, with immediate effect

The Guild in the statement apologised to the Director-General of the State Security Service (SSS) and the institution he represents for the embarrassment caused by Osuji’s actions, while reaffirming its commitment to upholding the highest standards of journalism and ensuring that members adhere to code of ethics.”

The Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in the statement said that Osuji will have the opportunity to appeal the decision to suspend him, and equally restated its dedication to promoting professional conduct and maintaining public trust in the media.”

Hours after messages were sent to the suspended member for his reaction, which he read as established by Penpushing Media, he opted to keep mute over the development.

Meanwhile, the Guild Conference held in Enugu state witnessed the election of new officers, induction of new members, and fellows of the Guild.
