A 38-year-old Nigerian human trafficker Alaba Makanjuola Asabi will spend the rest of his life languishing in prison after a South African court handed him two life sentences.

In addition to the two life sentences, Alaba was sentenced to an effective 45 years’ imprisonment for human trafficking when he appeared before North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria.

This comes after he trafficked two Zimbabwean women and forced them into sex work.

Alaba was arrested by the Hawks’ Human Trafficking Section in 2018 after a case of human trafficking was opened, News24 reports.

The two Zimbabwean women were rescued after two years of being forced into sex work. The two victims have since been repatriated back to Zimbabwe.

Speaking after Alaba’s sentencing, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Nomthandazo Mbambo revealed that Alaba was found guilty of two counts of trafficking in persons, for which he was sentenced to two life terms.

North Gauteng judge reportedly sentenced him to 15 years for financially benefitting from the services of a human trafficking victim, as defined by the Trafficking in Persons Act, and 10 years for the possession and manufacturing of child pornography. For his crimes, he is set to serve an effective total of 45 years of direct imprisonment.

The judge presiding over the case also ordered his particulars to be included in the national register for sex offenders
